The ACT Math section usually has 60 questions, and over three-quarters of them come from just 12 core topics. If you master these question types, you won't just study smarter; you'll absolutely need it to get a competitive score. This focused approach lets you really zero in your study time, so you're ready for the most common challenges on test day.

Algebra: It's the Core

Algebraic ideas are the foundation of ACT Math. You'll see them everywhere, from simple expressions to complex equations. You'll use these skills a lot, so you just have to get them down.

1. Solving Linear Equations and Inequalities

This is super basic. You'll find 'x' in equations like 3x + 7 = 16 or inequalities such as 2x - 5 < 11. Watch out for distributing negative signs. Also, remember to flip the inequality sign if you multiply or divide by a negative number. Lots of people mess these up. Many problems combine these, so you'll need multiple steps or to isolate a variable.

2. Systems of Equations

Expect problems with two or three linear equations and the same number of variables. You'll solve them using substitution or elimination. On a graph, this means finding where lines intersect. Sometimes, a question asks for the sum or product of the variables, not just what each one is. Always reread the question to make sure you're finding the right thing. So, if you get x=2 and y=3, but the question wants x+y, the answer is 5.

3. Functions

Functions (like f(x) = 2x - 3 or g(x) = x^2 + 5) are a big part of the test. You'll need to evaluate functions, understand their domain and range, and analyze their graphs. You might also see composition of functions, like f(g(x)). Remember f(x) is just y; it's the output for a specific input x. This connects to coordinate geometry, since functions graph the relationship between x and y.

4. Polynomials

You'll factor quadratic expressions (e.g., x^2 - 5x + 6) and do operations (add, subtract, multiply) with polynomials. Knowing special products (like perfect square trinomials or difference of squares) can save you time. Synthetic division or long division for polynomials might show up for higher-degree stuff. Factoring is often crucial for solving quadratic equations.

Geometry Matters

Geometry can feel scary, but if you focus on the common shapes and theorems, you'll see big improvements. The ACT often wants you to use formulas and logic.

5. Triangles (Right, Isosceles, Equilateral)

This includes the Pythagorean theorem (a^2 + b^2 = c^2), special right triangles (30-60-90 and 45-45-90), and basic trigonometry (SOH CAH TOA). You'll calculate areas, perimeters, and side lengths. Understanding similar triangles and their properties (sides in proportion, angles are the same) is really important too. For example, if two triangles are similar, their corresponding sides will have the same ratio. And don't forget, the angles in any triangle always add up to 180 degrees.

6. Circles

Circle problems will cover circumference, area, arc length, and sector area. You'll also work with equations of circles ((x-h)^2 + (y-k)^2 = r^2) and facts about tangents, chords, and inscribed angles. It's good to know how central angles and inscribed angles relate.

7. Coordinate Geometry

This section mixes algebra and geometry. You'll find distances between points, midpoints, slopes of lines, and write line equations. Parallel lines have the same slope; perpendicular lines have negative reciprocal slopes. You'll also graph lines and inequalities and figure out properties of shapes on the coordinate plane. For instance, calculating a triangle's area when you're given its vertices usually involves the distance formula.

8. Volume of 3D Shapes

Expect questions about the volume of rectangular solids, cylinders, cones, and spheres. Sometimes they give you these formulas, but it’s smarter to just memorize the common ones. Surface area questions pop up too. It can help to picture how unfolded 3D shapes (nets) relate to their surface area.

Algebra and geometry are big, but other areas also really impact your score. Don't ignore them; they often involve specific concepts or formulas that are easy to learn.

9. Ratios, Proportions, and Percentages

These get used in all sorts of situations, everything from simple math to word problems about taxes, discounts, or mixing ingredients. Knowing how these concepts connect is key. For example, a 20% discount means you pay 80% of the original price. Setting up proportions like a/b = c/d is a common tactic.

10. Statistics and Probability

For statistics, you'll need to find mean, median, mode, and range. Probability questions deal with simple probabilities, mutually exclusive events, and independent events. For independent events, P(A and B) = P(A) * P(B). Tree diagrams can help you visualize outcomes. Make sure you know the difference between the median (the middle number when things are ordered) and the mean (the average).

11. Data Interpretation

This means reading and understanding information presented in different graph types: bar charts, pie charts, scatter plots. You'll interpret patterns, compare data sets, and make predictions from the visuals. Really pay attention to labels, axes, and scales.

12. Trigonometry (Beyond Right Triangles)

While most trig is about right triangles, you might run into basic unit circle concepts, sine/cosine graphs, or the Law of Sines/Cosines in the tougher questions. These don't show up as often, but they can make a difference. Remember the exact values for common angles (0, 30, 45, 60, 90 degrees) for sine, cosine, and tangent.
